The 2012 Kansas Higher Education Sustainability Conference was held on
Wednesday, Sept. 5, in Manhattan.
Southwestern College
senior Shea Wilson, Arkansas City, presented at the conference.
The vision for this conference was to empower each of the attendees to
return to work with new commitments to help "sustain Kansas"
through work at the intersection of environmental, social, and economic issues
that will shape the future of Kansas.
The conference format was designed for three purposes for attendees:
•Learn more about and network with sustainability efforts around the
state in higher education
•Learn about challenges to sustainability work in commerce, non-profits
and advocacy, communities, and student life
•Engage others in renewing their commitment to sustainability work for
the future of Kansas
Kevin Minister, Visiting Scholar for the Institute for Discipleship,
attended the conference and was impressed with the presentation by Wilson.
“Shea's presentation exemplified the way in which Southwestern and the SC
Green Team are leading the way in addressing sustainability in Kansas higher
education,” Minister says. “On more than one occasion I heard someone say ‘I
wish we had that at our school’ in relation to some form of sustainability
programming at SC. It was also helpful to see how sustainability is being
addressed at other Kansas
schools that are working to institutionalize their commitments to
sustainability.”
Wilson is a biochemistry major at Southwestern College. After completion of his
undergraduate degree, he hopes to attend dental school. Wilson is an active member of the Green Team
and the Campus Sustainability Council at Southwestern. Before attending Southwestern College,
he served more than four years as an air traffic controller in the United
States Air Force, including a tour in Iraq.
