Reflections on Green Team Experience - Lisa Rupert

Lately when the words “environmental sustainability” crosses my mind, I reflect upon those aspiring to make a positive change in the world and in the midst of our campus. I think about the ones that believe their personal contributions toward going “green” will make a difference, and otherwise trust that their personal initiatives will have a positive influence upon others. If not for the ones responsible for inspiring the vision of sustainable living, such as Green Team Director, Jason Speegle, society would be trapped on an irrefutable path of impeding ecological growth. Furthermore, the vision would remain just that, if not for the individuals who selflessly contribute and lead others in effort to turn the team’s vision into a reality. Thanks to Green Team leaders, Sydnee Nelson, Tendai Kwaramba, Clinton Dick, Daniel VanSickle, Shea Wilson, Joey Tran, Jessica Ratzlaff, Elle Nguyen, and Ashta Jordan, inexperienced members, including myself, have been afforded the opportunity to learn about the vision, and assist in carrying out the dream. So, before delving into the undertakings that support the team’s initiative, I would like to pay homage to those who have made this opportunity possible, and have ultimately contributed to the team’s ongoing and increasing success.

“Well today, I’ve been looking into the Green Team of Arlington, TX on the website. I discover that there is a new gas station in my hometown called CNG Station. CNG stands for Compressed-Natural-Gas. According to the website of CNG (www.cngnow.com) Consisting mostly of methane, CNG is odorless, colorless and tasteless. It's drawn from domestically drilled natural gas wells or in conjunction with crude oil production. CNG costs about 50% less than gasoline or diesel, emits up to 90% fewer emissions than gasoline.” – Joey Tran

Reflections from Green Team Senior - Sydnee Nelson

As I begin my senior year here at Southwestern College, I have time to reflect on where the Green Team has been and where we have gotten to in the past four years. I see so many different people who feel that it is necessary to help change our school for the better – we are nowhere near perfect, but every little change makes all the difference. Everything from the library providing double sided copying to Green Team members raising awareness to issues – people want to care. We aren’t close to where I wanted SC to be by the time I graduated, but I must be realistic and I feel that every year we bring in new students who given the chance will bring us closer to the ultimate goal!
